1

List out your assets.

Begin by compiling a comprehensive list of all your assets. This includes cash on hand, savings in bank accounts, investments, gold, silver, real estate (not including your primary residence), and any other valuables or income-generating assets. Make sure to account for all items that hold monetary value, as these form the foundation for calculating your Zakat. Accuracy is key, as overlooking assets can lead to an incomplete calculation.

2

Next, subtract your debts.

After listing your assets, the next step is to deduct any liabilities or debts you owe. This includes outstanding loans, credit card balances, or payments due that must be settled. Subtracting debts ensures that your Zakat calculation reflects your net wealth, focusing only on the portion that is truly in your possession and under your control.

3

If your balance exceeds the Nisab value.

Once you’ve subtracted your debts from your assets, compare the remaining balance to the Nisab threshold. Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a person must have before being obligated to pay Zakat. This value, based on the weight of gold or silver, ensures that Zakat is only applicable to those with sufficient financial means. If your balance exceeds the Nisab, you are eligible to pay Zakat

4

Then, multiply it by 2.5% to get your Zakat.

Finally, calculate your Zakat by taking 2.5% of your net balance. This percentage applies to all eligible assets and represents your obligation to support those in need. For instance, if your net wealth is $10,000, your Zakat would amount to $250. Once calculated, you can distribute this amount to individuals or organizations eligible to receive Zakat, fulfilling both a spiritual and social responsibility.
